Living on the Sunshine Coast means our pool areas are our pride and joy, a place where the family can relax, unwind, and cool off during the summer heat. But recently, a customer reached out with a drainage issue that was taking the shine off their outdoor space.
They’d noticed water running under the fence and gathering in their pool area. Not only was this a nuisance, but the tan bark from next door was leaching colour and leaving stubborn stains on the pool tiles—and even in the pool itself. Not exactly the relaxing vibe you want on your porcelain tiles, in your favourite outdoor space.

The Problem!
After taking a look, it was clear that runoff from the neighbour’s regular garden watering was making its way under the fence and straight into the tiled pool area. Over time, this was causing discolouration to the tiles, slippery surfaces, and an overall messy appearance. Left unchecked, the excess water could have led to more serious issues like tiles lifting or damage to the surrounding surface. Something needed to be done to redirect the water and keep the pool zone clean, safe, and looking great for the family to enjoy.
Our Solution
To get on top of this drainage problem, we needed to install a solution that would:
Capture and redirect the water,
Handle ongoing runoff without issue,
Add a polished finish.
To tackle the issue properly, this project needed a drainage solution that was both effective and discreet.
- First, we cut out a neat section of the existing tiles and the concrete base along the fence line. This needed to be done carefully to preserve the surrounding area and maintain the clean lines of the pool zone.
- We then installed a strip drain, ensuring it had the correct fall to allow water to flow freely in the right direction. This step is crucial, without the right gradient, water can sit in the channel or back up, creating more problems.
- The drain was connected into the existing stormwater system, so all the excess water from the neighbour’s garden is now safely redirected well away from the pool area. No more pooling, no more unsightly staining, and no more water flowing where it shouldn't.
This solution not only fixed the drainage problem, but it also helped protect the integrity of the pool surrounds for the long term.
We finished the area with a fresh coat of white fence paint, giving it a vibrant, clean look that clean look that makes the whole space pop!
Finishing Touches
No one wants a drainage system that stands out for the wrong reasons, especially in an area meant for relaxing, entertaining, and enjoying time by the pool. So, to finish the job off with both style and function, we topped the new drainage channel with polished black river rocks.
This choice wasn’t just about aesthetics (though the rocks really do pop against the grey tiles and crisp white fence). The rocks also serve a practical purpose: they help filter out leaves, tan bark and other debris, while still allowing water to flow freely into the drain below. This keeps the system working efficiently without becoming an eyesore or a tripping hazard.
An added bonus? The improved drainage also eliminates standing water, which helps prevent mosquitoes from breeding—a common issue in shaded or wet outdoor areas on the Coast.
The end result is a clean, seamless finish that complements the pool area beautifully and gives the space a neat, modern look—while keeping it safe, functional, and low maintenance.
A Clean Result
The final result? No more brown water flowing into the pool area. No more unsightly staining from tan bark.
We have a smart, low-profile drainage system that does its job without disrupting the look of the space. Our customers are happy and so are we!
